NWCTP Researcher Beri Juraic receives Carol Fisher Sorgenfrei Prize for Japanese Theatre Scholarship
NWCDTP researcher Beri Juriac on receiving Carol Fisher Sorgenfrei Prize for Japanese Theatre Scholarship:
‘I am honoured to have received Carol Fisher Sorgenfrei Prize for Japanese Theatre Scholarship for an article I wrote in collaboration with Tokyo-based theatre director Yuta Hagiwara. The article follows his company Kamome Machine as they are developing a new theatre project on Nanjing Massacre. It demonstrates the importance of collaboration between researchers and artists. This award is particularly meaningful since Professor Sorgenfrei’s pioneering research has been instrumental in my own understanding of postwar and contemporary Japanese theatre. I am also glad that the Prize Committee recognised the significance of including artist’s voice in the research methodology. This kind of research could not have been possible without the generosity and openness of director Hagiwara and Kamome Machine members Honami and Shin. I hope we will continue collaborating in the future.’
